What is it With People who try to Empathize With Narcissists as Being Childhood Abuse Victims and if we had the Same Horrible Experience Narcissistic Actions are Simply Justified or Accepted Answered by Debra Sutton on Quora

These people who invalidate the experience of those who were abused by narcissists and seem to defend the narcissist as being victims of childhood abuse are definitely out to invalidate our experience. Many of them are internet trolls and personally seek us out in order to diminish us. They definitely have a one sided scewed view. I personally believe these people are narcissists themselves. The reason I think this is because they seek us out in order to attack, diminish, and invalidate us. We don’t even know them they are strangers and they go out of their way to find us online. They make up fake profiles too cowardly to reveal themselves. They even join support groups and forums under fake names. They seek us out, it is intentional. They are nothing more than cowardly trolls who are out to hurt us. The best thing to do is to ignore them. I admit I have been sucked into responding to them. They will twist everything you say. They are being fueled by our responses. I think we can see the troll questions and comments and chose to ignore them. People defend the actions of those they relate to. They are defending their own kind.

According to an article on psychology today by Jennifer Golbeck Ph.D.

An internet troll will come into an online discussion, group or forum with questions and comments designed to upset everyone. Trolls will lie, exaggerate, and offend to get a response.

Canadian researches did an online study to find out what kind of person would do this. They conducted 2 online studies with 1,200 people. Giving personality test to each subject along with a survey about their internet commenting behavior. They were looking for evidence that linked trolling with the “Dark Tetrad” of personality traits: narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadism.

They found that Dark Tetrad scores were highest among people who said trolling was their favorite Internet activity.

Their scores for all four traits soar on the chart. The relationship between trolling and the Dark Tetrad is so significant that the authors write in their paper:

“… the associations between sadism and GAIT (Global Assessment of Internet Trolling) scores were so strong that it might be said that online trolls are prototypical everyday sadists.” [emphasis added]

Trolls truly enjoy making you feel bad. To quote the authors once more (because this is a truly quotable article): “Both trolls and sadists feel sadistic glee at the distress of others. Sadists just want to have fun … and the Internet is their playground!”
